Welcome to Russia! An English-speaking guide will meet you at the airport and get you settled safely into your hotel; dinner is included upon your arrival. If you are up for it, you may have time to do some exploring on your own this evening, to take in the sights, sounds, and smells of Moscow. Regardless, have a great first night of sleep, and prepare for your trip of a lifetime!

Your first full day in Russia will not disappoint, as you experience the must-sees for anyone traveling to Russia for the first time: Red Square, the Kremlin, and the famous metro. Standing in the middle of Red Square, you can’t help but feel overwhelmed by the weight of both history and modernity surrounding you: the Kremlin walls, St. Basil’s Cathedral, Lenin’s Tomb, Gum Mall. You will have a guided tour of Moscow’s highlights, including going inside the world-renowned Kremlin, and experiencing first-hand the world’s deepest underground metro, and some of its unique architectural designs at each stop.

As you adjust to the hustle and bustle of Moscow life, today you’ll enjoy savoring some of Russians’ most treasured landmarks: the Cathedral of Christ the Savior and Kolomenskoe National Park and Museum, being two of them. The Kolomenskoe property has existed in some form since the 14th century and played a major role in several Russian Tsar’s lives during the 17th and 18th centuries. After lunch, enjoy what is sure to be a highlight of your time in Russia’s capital city, a guided boat-tour through the heart of Moscow. After your final dinner in beautiful Moscow, prepare for a classic local experience: taking an overnight train to St. Petersburg! Russia has an incredible cross-country train system, and you surely won’t forget this experience of a lifetime. You may even make some new friends with your Russian bunk-mates!

After breakfast on the train, your guide will meet you at the train station, and give you a guided city tour of St. Petersburg, the cultural capital of Russia. You’ll quickly notice why they call St. Petersburg, the “Venice of the North.” The architecture and design of buildings and the city is very “European” in feel. After lunch, you’ll have guided tours of the Peter and Paul Fortress, built in the 18th century, and the world famous Hermitage Art Museum, the 2nd largest in the world, only behind the Louvre. St. Petersburg has done an amazing job of preserving the beauty of many of its ancient sites, as you will notice. You’ll have time to check out the St. Petersburg nightlife tonight, if you so choose.

This morning you’ll fly to a totally different world within Russia! After flying into the Caucasus Mineral Waters airport (MRV), enjoy the scenic drive to Mt. Elbrus, the highest mountain in Europe. Brush up on the history of the Balkar people along the way, among whom you will be spending the next few days. Prepare for a stunning detour for your picnic lunch, at Bylym Lake, an incredible lake nestled among grassy hills and rising rock faces. Once you have completed the breathtaking drive to Mt. Elbrus, check into your hotel and enjoy some free time to explore the area and take in the views around you. Don’t blink, because you will have risen 7,000 feet above sea level on this 3 hr. drive without even noticing! Breathe in the fresh mountain air and relax under the beautiful, clear night sky.

Today is dedicated to Mt. Elbrus, the gem of the North Caucasus. After breakfast, you will ascend up 3 levels of cable cars to 14,000 feet (3,800 meters), base camp for Elbrus’s aspiring mountaineers from all over the world. Even in the middle of the summer heat, you will want to dress warm, as it can snow at base camp in August. You won’t want to rush today, as you soak in the majestic views of the Caucasus range all around you. Perhaps your time on the mountain will inspire you to return one day to climb it? After a filling late lunch of Balkar food with some of the best restaurant views you’ll ever have, descend back down the mountain to Elbrus’s charming souvenir markets, full of tempting local goods, including Caucasus Papakha hats, beautiful hand-knit slippers, shawls, and tasty local jams. Take it easy after dinner as today’s changes in elevation will have surprisingly worn you out!

Wake up to one of many stunning sunrises the North Caucasus has to offer. Explore one of the many hidden beauties of the Elbrus valley this morning, as you take an excursion to a jaw-dropping waterfall off the beaten path. In the afternoon, get up and close with a famous Kabardian horse, for a short trot through the lush Elbrus forests. Wrap up this memorable time in Elbrus with a local Balkar family in their home for dinner, trying their famous cheese-filled hichini dish and airan, a yogurt-like drink sure to fill you up.

Enjoy a slow morning in your last hours in the Caucasus; sleep in, soak in the views, or enjoy a leisurely breakfast with some mountain tea. Can you believe it?! This is your final day in Russia. Pack your bags and say goodbye for now to Russia and the Caucasus, a place we hope you will come back for another adventure in very soon. Fly out of the local Mineral Waters airport (MRV) back to wherever you call home.
